Just east of the Des Plaines River you’ll find Potawatomi Woods. A truly tranquil little piece of nature, it’s a favorite of locals seeking the peace and beauty offered by its lush forestry. It features several walking trails suitable for travelers looking for a bit of a challenge. Since it’s a mere 15 minutes from our apartments in Wheeling, Illinois, your commute will be a breeze.
Buffalo Creek Trail
Buffalo Creek Trail is a sunny, varied-terrain trail that measures four miles. It’s a great place to catch a glimpse at the local deer, and the many fields are the home of gorgeous wildflowers. This path also traverses over water thanks to well-maintained bridge systems, so don’t forget to bring your bug spray.
Edward L. Ryerson Conservation Area
Though it’s gorgeous in all seasons, the Edward L. Ryerson Conservation Area is especially pretty in the fall. This rustic preserve features thoughtfully bilingual signage and mindfulness prompts. It’s the ideal place for hobby-ing nature photographers. Keep your eyes sharp to spot the foxes, turtles, and birds that call this area home.
Laura Ingalls Wilder once said, “If you truly love nature, you will find beauty everywhere.” After visiting these local outdoor hotspots, we’re inclined to agree with her.
